Capillary Action
Our class has been learning about plants, plant parts, and how these parts help them to grow and thrive. A new term for us is “capillary action.” We found that this is how plants draw water and nutrients up through the roots, up the stem, and it flows through the plant. Teams tested different materials for this action. They will use their discoveries to plan a design to make their own bio-inspired flower.

Making Crystals
Our class has been learning about minerals and rocks. We took some time out to make our own crystals in order to see what hardness, streak, luster, and structure or shape they would cleave or break into. We had some of the most sparkly crystals to show off!

Save the Penguin!
Our class has learned many things in science. We like to work on an engineering design projects for the concepts that we learn about. After learning about states of matter and how heat and light work, each student designed a home to keep penguins safe. Students used what they had learned to make their houses retain a temperature that would keep the penguins cool, and not let them get too warm. Penguins were made out of ice. Some of our student house designers keep their penguins alive for a long time! Way to go class!

Learning About Different Cultures
Our class has been reading about many different cultures during the past 5 weeks. As we have learned about these diverse people, students were asked to learn about their own family history, cultures, and favorite foods by talking to their parents or grandparents. Students will have the chance to create family trees, memory books, Google Slides, maps, and more to go along with this unit. They have also found out some family food favorites to share. Below you will find our collection of recipes, and we hope you will try them and enjoy them!

Penguin Habitats
Our students were using what they learned about heat and light to build homes for penguins. Their goal was to build a model home that would no bigger than 15 cm x 15 cm, use approved supplies, and make sure that the home would allow the penguin to stay cool inside. Students put their knowledge to the test, made designs, then built their homes. Little ice penguins went into the houses. The penguins were weighed every half hour to see if they were getting smaller. Our winning time was almost 4 hours keeping the penguins alive and cool. Tessa and Brady tied for the longest time! Everyone had fun making great designs, deciding what was successful about them, and then reflecting about how they would improve them!

Blooming in Color
Look at our flowers bloom with color! Teams that built successful plant parts were able to watch how real plants draw water and nutrients from the soil to help a plant grow. Those that didn’t work quite right provided teams a chance to discover design flaws that they could improve.

Bio-inspired Flowers
Students worked in teams to build working flowers that would bloom in color. They planned designs in their notebooks together. After planning, teams used materials that they had tested for capillary action in earlier lessons to make a roots, stem, and the flower petals. Check out the great teamwork!

Science Central
Third grade took their study trip to Science Central. It was a super fun trip full of so many interesting things. Everyone could test out how the things around us work. We could try out simple machines, weather, hearts pumping, gravity, and so much more! There were daredevil bike rides high above our heads, animals and water exhibits to interact with too. The weather was perfect at the park during lunch too!

Learning about crystals and rocks...
Our class is beginning to study minerals that join together to make up rocks. We are finding that many of them are part of our daily life and in our homes. Be sure to look on our science tab to see all the ways these earthen resources are used. Have fun checking out each area of the house. We have discovered the luster, hardness, color and color streak are all ways to help identify the type they are. We are now learning about the rock cycle and three main rock types the go through this cycle. See some of the students creating their own crystals below.

Science Design in Action
Our class has been learning about heat and light energy, so this is the perfect time to test out some of the things we have read about. Students thought about what they knew on the subject, and then sketched out their ideas about how to design a drink box holder that will keep a drink cool even in at hot car! Soon we will put each design to the test and hopefully nobody gets stuck with warm juice!

Third Grade Pumpkin Drop
After lots of set backs on our drop date, our creative engineers were finally given a chance to test their packaging! Students were challenged to create something that could safely get their pumpkin from the top of the bleachers to the ground. The goal was to have no damage to the pumpkins. Students were great designers because we had many successful pumpkins that arrived on the ground without damage. Mr. Tim Lemler donated pumpkins for our student groups and families sent in supplies that the kids could use in building! Everyone seemed to enjoy the process; and even the chilly test day to see the outcome! WELL DONE EVERYONE!!!!

Indian Art
Our class has been learning about different Native American Indian groups from the United States. Even though each culture area has differences, we have discovered that every group had a great respect for nature. They tried to show honor by including decorative and natural elements to their every day items. Students in class looked through many examples and then selected an artifact that they wanted to replicate. Enjoy our third grade artists present their Indian Artifact creations!

Fair Oaks Dairy
Our class enjoyed a beautiful day at the dairy! After spending time learning about types of communities, farms, cows, nutrition, and more, we were able to go visit a HUGE farm that milks 72 cows at a time on a "Dairy-go-Round." It was amazing to be Driving the bus through the barn which allowed us to see cows eating and sleeping right by our window. At the milking parlor we watched how the cows make their way to the parlor, then walk on and off the carousel all by their-selves. Pipes were attached to a wall in the parlor that made it possible for everyone to feel the temperature of the milk as it left the cows and how it felt after being in the coolers. There were many things to go see and do. We were a bit rushed on time, and only saw part of the cow birth, but it was a wonderful visit!

Math Teams At Work!
Students love to do weekly problem solving during math! We do problem solving strategies each week, but try to get a team problem in each week too! Each group tries to include everyone in thinking through the strategies and steps necessary to solve a multi-step problem. Sometimes they present their outcomes to the class and sometimes they evaluate each others work. Either way we have fun and practice our math skills!

Biography Writing
Our class has been reading biographies in class, so we have moved on to learning how to do research, take notes, and create an informative piece of writing. This is a large writing project that takes effort and perseverance. In order to make this successful for students, we have broken this project into many small tasks with classroom examples, practice, and work time. Families will notice that the schedule below has plenty of time spread out over several weeks. Please check in with your child to make sure that they are meeting these due dates along the way. The project is much easier to do in small bit than it is to complete it all in a short time span. I will help notify families with the circle around the word "Biography" on the pink homework log if a child is behind. I gladly welcome contact as well! You can message me on Class Dojo, email, or call. This is a new learning experience and working together is the best way to ensure success now and for future writing project in years to come! Each student has the ability to create something they can be proud of!

VIP Day
Students had an exciting day today getting a visit from their special VIP's! We have been looking forward to this fun day of sharing, and we were thrilled that so many people were able to join us in the classroom. Families were able to see a small bit of our actual school day, eat lunch together, interview, and then take time to work together on a short engineering design challenge. Each student/VIP team came up with some very creative ways to build a stand that could hold two cups up for a ring toss game! We hope you enjoyed your day with us, and can find some of the fun you had in the pictures below. THANK YOU VIP's!
Please read what students said about their VIP visit below the pictures.

Dr. Collins Visits
Dr. Collins is one of the veterinarians at Bourbon Veterinary Hospital. She had just finished up surgery on a chocolate lab before arriving to visit third graders at Triton Elementary. The students enjoyed hearing about the types of classes she needed to study during her 8 years of college, and the amount of work that it takes to do this type of job! She told us that half of her education time was at Purdue, and the other half at Michigan. Several students still thought this was a career that they would like after hearing about some of the challenges that veterinarians face. Dr. Collins showed us the tools that she frequently needs to do her job. The ones to give medicines and shots were very large and surprised the students. She also explained how veterinarians help dairy farms and cows since we will be visiting Fair Oaks Dairy this week. We did not get to see many of the exciting tools that she uses on the road when she visits farms because a fast moving rain rolled in! We still had a great visit with Dr. Collins and thank her for taking time to share with us about a job that she really loves doing!

Nurse Newman Visits
We enjoyed Nurse Newman coming to third grade to share about cows that she raises on her own. She has been involved with dairy her entire life. She still enjoys raising cows, showing them, caring for them, and helping youth with dairy cows in 4-H! Nurse Newman has Holstein cows and is proud to share what she knows with others. She sent us with wishes for a great study trip to Fair Oaks! Thank you Nurse Newman!

Flashlight Friday
Our class enjoyed a special celebration to end our first unit of study in reading. We did several activities to review our lessons from Unit 1 and then took our test. After the test, we were able to find a cozy place in the classroom with our friends. We enjoyed nibbling snacks as we read our favorite stories with our flashlights!

Dictionaries come to 3rd Grade
Each year the local Lions club provides dictionaries to third graders. They graciously come to visit us and share these with our students as a community service. The kids love these books! They not only are great for looking up words, but help us in our classroom studies, and are fun to read since they are packed with many pages of fun facts. THANK YOU LIONS!

Engineering Design
Our class has worked on the sequence of the scientific method, so now we are moving on to learn about the engineering design process. After some time comparing the two models, we began an engineering challenge called "Life Guard Chair." The engineering design challenges always begin with a potential "real world" problem that students need to develop a solution for. The chairs will need to be at least 35 cm tall, strong enough to stand on their own, and hold a "toy life guard" for at least 20 seconds without falling or collapsing. You can see some of our progress below. We hope to test each team chair when we return from Labor Day.

Father Robert Visits Third Grade
Last year, students in second grade wrote letters back and forth to Father Robert's school in Tanzania, Africa. He came to the elementary today with Mrs. McIntire. His goal was to meet the kids that had corresponded with his school last school year, and invite them to continue the connection that they had started. Students will have the chance to be pen pals again this year with their distant friends across the ocean!

RACE DAY!!!!
Mr. Carpenter placed everyone in the "pit" and began his job as the race official. He graciously made race brackets for everyone and explained how they would move thier puff mobiles. He then instructed contestants to line up at the starting line, gave the signal, and zoooooom! Some designs worked well and others did not. We discussed that if the design did not work well, could there be any changes that could help improve the performance. Our class is learning that the process of learning is more important than the product! Everyone had a lot of fun, but we did have four designs that were the fastest. They were created by Preston, Aiden, Willa, and Ernest. Great job to our fantastic designers and a thrilling race!

Learning about the scientific method
Third grade has started to learn about the scientific method in science. Our class had fun learning about the scientific method by making paper airplanes. Step one was to think of how a paper airplane would be constructed to fly the farthest. Students thought about what they had observed in real planes and ones that they have seen made out of paper. Each person made a hypothesis, or guess about what design would be best, planned how to make it, made the plane, then tested it. After flying all of the planes we analyzed the outcomes and discussed how to redesign them to retest! This helped us learn the method. Our class then practiced it further when they moved on to designing "Puff Mobiles." Check out our talented designers in the following pictures! We will race each mobile in the gym next week!
Third grade has started to learn about the scientific method in science. Our class had fun learning about the scientific method by making paper airplanes. Welcome Back!
It is hard to believe a new year is about to begin on August 7th, but I am excited to be welcoming you all back to Triton and grade 3! Third grade is a fantastic place to be, and I am looking forward to helping a new group of wonderful learners get ready to BE, DO, and BECOME GREAT! I am just as excited to welcome their families while helping them be connected to their child's learning and our classroom. There are many new changes, challenges, and responsiblities that will be new to students and parents in our grade. We will learn about these things and more in class, but I want families to know what is going on too. Families will find the daily homework list, schedules, newsnotes, spelling lists, classroom pictures, and many other relavant tidbits right here on this, OUR CLASS WEBPAGE! A paper newsnote is also included in student mail each Friday.
Each Friday families can also expect to receive a "pink colored" homework log to let them know if their child is turning in all work. That will be noted on the log by a star and the works, "ALL IN!" If any item is circled on that page, families will know the circled items were not turned in, and grades will be negatively impacted. Please sign the bottom of this log Friday and return it on the next school day. All work done for the week will be stapled together with a blue progress topper. I also ask that this is signed Friday and returned the next school day. When parents sign these two items each week, it allows them to know is work getting done, how well is it getting done, and what skills their child is successful with or need help with. When I get them back signed, I know each week that I have shared specific information about each child with each family. I am easy to get ahold of to speak with and/or answer questions. The easiest way to reach me is by signing up for Class Dojo and texting me. You can also call the school and ask to leave a message for me, or email me through the school or class webpage links. I typically get back to families quickly the same day they ask. If it is class time, I generally am not able to get back to anyone until I have a break.
I will get back to you! Things work best when the family and teacher work together!
I am looking forward to our year together, and I thank you for allowing me to add to the education of your child! Expect the Best!
