Biography Writing
Our class has been reading biographies in class, so we have moved on to learning how to do research, take notes, and create an informative piece of writing. This is a large writing project that takes effort and perseverance. In order to make this successful for students, we have broken this project into many small tasks with classroom examples, practice, and work time. Families will notice that the schedule below has plenty of time spread out over several weeks. Please check in with your child to make sure that they are meeting these due dates along the way. The project is much easier to do in small bit than it is to complete it all in a short time span. I will help notify families with the circle around the word "Biography" on the pink homework log if a child is behind. I gladly welcome contact as well! You can message me on Class Dojo, email, or call. This is a new learning experience and working together is the best way to ensure success now and for future writing project in years to come! Each student has the ability to create something they can be proud of!

Science Design in Action
Our class has been learning about heat and light energy, so this is the perfect time to test out some of the things we have read about. Students thought about what they knew on the subject, and then sketched out their ideas about how to design a drink box holder that will keep a drink cool even in at hot car! Soon we will put each design to the test and hopefully nobody gets stuck with warm juice!

Happy New Year!
Welcome back to semester two of our school year! It is great to be back and there are so many exciting things planned in the coming weeks. This is the perfect time to think about the great things and not-so-great things that have happened in third grade. As we reflect on these things, it is fantastic to know that everything starts fresh again. It is the time to consider how we can move the "not-so-great" things into the "GREAT" category here at school and anywhere else we choose. This week we talked about this and looked at some scenarios that could happen to us. We looked at some plans to evaluate and then came up with our own plans. Plans were evaluated to determine if they were in a usable order, simple to do, and that we could actually accomplish it. Teams recorded their plans on Flipgrid. Have your child sign in to Flipgrid and show you what they and their classmates had to say! Let's make 2019 the year of our personal best!

Third Grade Pumpkin Drop
After lots of set backs on our drop date, our creative engineers were finally given a chance to test their packaging! Students were challenged to create something that could safely get their pumpkin from the top of the bleachers to the ground. The goal was to have no damage to the pumpkins. Students were great designers because we had many successful pumpkins that arrived on the ground without damage. Mr. Tim Lemler donated pumpkins for our student groups and families sent in supplies that the kids could use in building! Everyone seemed to enjoy the process; and even the chilly test day to see the outcome! WELL DONE EVERYONE!!!!

Indian Art
Our class has been learning about different Native American Indian groups from the United States. Even though each culture area has differences, we have discovered that every group had a great respect for nature. They tried to show honor by including decorative and natural elements to their every day items. Students in class looked through many examples and then selected an artifact that they wanted to replicate. Enjoy our third grade artists present their Indian Artifact creations!

Math Teams At Work!
Students love to do weekly problem solving during math! We do problem solving strategies each week, but try to get a team problem in each week too! Each group tries to include everyone in thinking through the strategies and steps necessary to solve a multi-step problem. Sometimes they present their outcomes to the class and sometimes they evaluate each others work. Either way we have fun and practice our math skills!

Fair Oaks Dairy
Our class enjoyed a beautiful day at the dairy! After spending time learning about types of communities, farms, cows, nutrition, and more, we were able to go visit a HUGE farm that milks 72 cows at a time on a "Dairy-go-Round." It was amazing to be Driving the bus through the barn which allowed us to see cows eating and sleeping right by our window. At the milking parlor we watched how the cows make their way to the parlor, then walk on and off the carousel all by their-selves. Pipes were attached to a wall in the parlor that made it possible for everyone to feel the temperature of the milk as it left the cows and how it felt after being in the coolers. There were many things to go see and do. We were a bit rushed on time, and only saw part of the cow birth, but it was a wonderful visit!

Class Dojo
Our classroom uses Class Dojo to help students set individual goals and track progress. Students also like to use it to work towards rewards, but it is not used as punishment. Families typically like knowing if their child is turning in homework, staying on task, showing PRIDE, or if they are having trouble with self control. Keep in mind, Class Dojo is a simply a snap shot in time, but that trends are sometimes helpful to realign goals! We also use it as a tool to improve learning with lessons in "Growth Mindset." Click on the Class Dojo banner to the left to see a short video on how it works. If you had an account with Class Dojo last year, it should connect with our class this year. If you did not have an account, I will send instructions home during our first full week of school for you. You are not required to sign up or connect to this app. I do post special events and reminders from time-to-time. If you are only interested in school delays and closings, I send these out on an app called "REMIND" (information below). The school also has a phone call/text notification for these circumstances, so you are not required to sign up with REMIND if you are satisfied with the other notifications. |
Xtra Math & Moby Max
Our class uses Xtra Math & Moby Max to help students with fact practice in our classroom. These programs help students to learn facts along with building their speed and knowledge of facts. Students can access these math activities just we do in our classroom by going to our class webpage, selecting the program desired, and then logging in with your student username and pin (Student Usernames and Pins are kept on homework folders). The nice feature to these programs is that parents can also log in and check on progress. These links test the student and then moves them through adding, subtracting, multiplication, and division facts based on the child's performance. I truly appreciate it matching student needs and I think parents will appreciate knowing exactly what their child knows or needs to know. Check it out! Our class code is: HYSMRJZK if you need to set up your account at home. |
