Heat and Light:
Our class has been learning about heat and light. We have dicussed how light travels in a straight line, it can reflect, refract, and absorb. Each student throught about the things that they learned and then designed a penguin habitat. They had certain criteria to follow as they build their homes. Each one was very different! Everyone was given an ice penguin to place in their house and each penguin was weighed and each house tested for heat changes at 30 minute intervals. Brooke, Jaydon W., Kendra and Arthur were able to keep their penguin from melting the longest! Congratulations to all of our builders.

Bio-Inspired Flowers
Our class has been learning about plants, plant parts, and their functions. We worked on designing and building a flower that would have all of the parts needed to actually "grow." Each team needed to come up with a design that had a flower that would get its color from the nutrients supplied (colored water). The flower would need a stem for support, and a root system that could carry nutrients (or color) through the plant. We learned that this process is known as "capillary action." Who's design will actually BLOOM!

Save the Wolf
Our class has been getting in some last minute science fun as we learn about simple machines. Students have learned about the lever, pulley, wheel & axle, wedge, incline plane, and screw. They have been challenged to put two or more of these simple machines together to make a compound machine that can safely trap a toy wolf. We have some great creations in progress to test out soon!

What Makes Sound?
Vibrations of course! As our class studies what makes sound and how it travels, we have added an engineering design challenge to the mix. Students were given the task to create a musical instrument with select materials, time, at least one string, at least three different pitches, and a cost of $10 or less. Students created individual sketches of their ideas. They then ended up with a team to recreate a together sketch before building their prototype. Soon each team will present their designs and prototypes to the class. The will demonstrate their prototype and the class will help evaluate if each point of criteria has been met. Way to go!

Native American Art
Our class has been reading about the Native Americans of North America. We have discovered that all Indians respected nature and cared about their environment. We also discoved to honor nature, that they made everyday objects works of art. Below you will see some of classes recreations of these articles.

Fall Party Fun
Our class had plenty of fun on Fall Pary Day! We worked with partners to practice multiplication, graphs, and story problems using spiders. We had the lights low and the spooky music to go along with the mood during spider math too! Later while in reading we worked in teams to read clues and put them together to solve a mystery. Our mystery was the Monster Mash, a dance that we wanted to learn, but found out it was really a monster trap. Our teams worked together to successfully solve the mystery and get free in time for lunch. In the afternoon, we enjoyed wonderful treats and a movie. Thank you to all of the families that helped our class enjoy a wonderful party with fantastic treats! We could not have done it without you!

Dictionaries from the Lions Clubs
Mr. Riffle welcomed some very generous guests to Triton Elementary today (10/12/17)! Representatives from the Bourbon and Etna Green Lions clubs came to visit third graders and present them with dictionaries. The kindness of this community service group provides these free to our kids to be used for school all year in the classroom, and then to be able to take these resources home to be used forever after our school year ends. We greatly appreciate the gracious gifts that the local Lions Clubs are williing to share with us!

Making Butter
After several weeks of learning about communities, cows, goods and services, and so much more....We made our own butter in class. It took a lot of shaking to get our cream to turn into butter, but it tasted great!

A Visit from the Bourbon Veterinary Clinic
Dr. Collins came from our local veterinary office to help our third graders get to know how animals are cared for. She also helped us see what education is important for anyone that may want to work with animals. Kids enjoyed hearing how she has had to help all different types of animals; even camals and zebra, and all the work veterinarians put in on dairy farms.

A visit from our Purdue Marshall County Extension Office
Ms. Kelsey Sajdera came to visit third graders this week to help us learn more about rural communities. She shared how farms provide the community with an economy, careers that are associated with farms, and how cows benefit us with more than delicious dairy products.

Welcome Back!
I am Mrs. Strycker and I am happy to welcome you to our classroom. I am excited to be your teacher this year and we are going to do a lot of really fun things in third grade! Of course there will be a lot of challenge, work, and learning too! I hope you had a fantastic summer and I will be anxious to hear about it during our first week of school. It was great to meet families and our new class of students at Open House on Wednesday, August 2nd. We had a great first day in third grade. Take a look at these great kids!
