Field Day and Wolf Traps!
Our class had a great day playing games at field day! We played hard and finished strong. After a very active and hot morning playing, we enjoyed lunch and some final science fun! To end our studies with simple machines, students created wolf traps for a challenge called, "Save the Wolf." We had some great team projects and lots of fun! What a day!

Field Day
What a beautiful day for some friendly competition at our elementary field day! Everyone had a great time working hard and having a fun time playing games all morning. It was hot, but everyone worked hard to be wonderful team players and good sports! Way to show that Trojan Pride!

Simple Machines
Our class has enjoyed learning about simple machines in nature and around us. We have learned a lot, so now we are working on putting all of that knowledge together to make a compound machine that will safely capture a wolf! Our challenge is called "Save the Wolf." This is a big challenge, but our building teams are excited to see what they can create to meet this challenge!

Bio-Inspired Flowers
Third graders have been learning about plants and their life cycles. Teams have created a plan to help them build a flower that will work just like real one. They need to include roots, stems, and flowers for this challenge. The trick is that the roots needs to actually pull up "food" colored water through the stem, and up to the flower to show how the nutrients are carried through the plant to help the flower be a colorful bloom. Look at all of that creativity!

Ag Day 2022
We had a great day at the high school as students in agriculture told us about different animals. It was so much fun to see these older kids share with our third graders. The third graders loved seeing and petting every farm critter they could. Some students had time to get on the tractor too!

Learning about being a veterinarian
Today students had fun (despite the cold) meeting Dr. Collins and her assistant Carre from the Bourbon Veterinary Hospital. We were so happy that they could come to speak with our third graders and help them learn about what a vet does and how this could be a job they might enjoy having when they get older. We saw many tools used in the office or out on a farm to help animals. We also were able to see how small animals are cared for! Thanks so much for sharing with us!

Earthen Dam
Another great event for us putting what we have learned in class to the challenge. Our class has been studying soil, rocks, and earthen materals. Learning about rocks was especially fun, but how can we use these things to hold water back? Teams had many different ideas that they planned in their science note books. We were lucky to get a nice warm day to go outside and build our designs. The next day we tested them in our class. Some of our teams had great success and others found leaks.

Fair Oaks Dairy Farm
Third graders have been learning about communities like urban, suburban, and rural. We have discussed features these communites share, climates, consumers and producers, goods and services and natural resources. Since we live in a rural community, we have spent extra time on farming. As a fun part of our studies we enjoyed a beautiful sunny day at the farm. Despite a few little technical difficulties our fast trip was full of fun and new experiences. Our chaperones were fabulous too! They helped us to stay safely together throughout our travels.
GERMS, GERMS, GERMS
Getting sick isn't any fun! Our class has been reading about how people get sick and how can we minimize our chances of getting that way. One of the best ways to stay well is by washing our hands. Students practiced how different ways of washing hands removed "GLITTER" germs. Soap and water with a good rub while singing "Happy Birthday" slowly did a great job of helping us be germ free!

Science Fun!
Our class enjoyed practicing the engineering design process with a special Christmas themed problem. The task was to design a new sleigh for Santa to help him deliver presents. We had some amazing ideas that became awesome realities! We hope you enjoy seeing our work in progress as much as we had building!

Lions Club Visits
Third grade was visited by members of the Lions Clubs of Bourbon, Etna Green, and Tippecanoe. As a community service, they share dictionaries with the students. The dictionaries are used all year in school before going home with students to keep. They are full of great resources, words, facts, and more. The students truly enjoy this generous gift from our local Lions!

Triton Gives Back Day
We had a great day thinking about others and doing something special for them. Third grade takes great pride in supporting Dustin's Place (an organization to help children that are in circumstances of grief needing support) and Operation Quiet Comfort (a military organization that provides physical and emotional support to America’s military men and women while they are serving in harm’s way). Treat bags were made for Dustin's Place, and students created colorful cards with encouragement and thanks to be packed in military care boxes. We even had some wonderful family help this year. Treats and care products were sent in by several families to be included in the care boxes going to our brave service men and women.
Students were able to hear a special message about how much their notes mean to those that serve from Mr. Blue (retired Marine). They also heard about active duty with Sergeant Dobson our local Army Recruiter. He brought along an amazing military vehicle and everyone had a chance to get inside to see the amazing technology inside. He also gave everyone the great sunglasses you can see in our pictures. What a fantastic day! Thank you for helping us have a super day doing things for others!

Flashlight Friday
What a fun day! We were able to celebrate the end of our first unit in reading with a special time to read books of our choice with friends. Everyone found a cozy spot to settle in with their blankets and pillows. They were able to share books, eat some snacks, and share stories. It was a lot of fun to enjoy some free choice reading!

Engineering Design
Our students have been learning the scientific method and how it relates to engineer design. Our first try with the design process was to build a life guard chair. Students were only given note cards and tape for this project. They planned out the problem, setting, client, end user, criteria, and constraints. The next step was to think about design ideas and sketch them in their science notebooks. Our building began, and the testing followed. In the end, we had some awesome designs with varying degrees of success in. After testing, students thought about their product and considered what were the successes and failures of it. These reflections helped them think about how to improve their chair. Wonderful job!

Learning the scientific method
Students have started our school year in science by learning about the scientific method. We have discovered that we are all scientists when we look around to observe things. As we see things, we often have questions about them. Those questions take us towards thinking about reasons that might answer our questions. If we try our possible solutions and review the results of those tests, we have worked our way through the method. To try this out, we asked what makes a paper airplane fly the best? Students considered paper types, wing shape, plane shape, length, and more. They built their planes and raced each other. Students made very creative airplanes, but in the end, Levi and Sabrya came up with the most consistent flyers! Super work to all of our inspired scientists!

Meet our 2021-2022 class...
Look at the great new faces in our third grade classroom! We had a great first day and I can tell that we will have a great year! Students started out learning the procedures of third grade and getting to know one another. We have been sharing a little about ourselves with short presentations on the big screen in front of the class. It is fun learning about family, pets, interests, and more. Keep checking back to watch the great things we do this year! I am so glad to meet you all and have you as part of our Triton Third Grade Family!
